Blackberry season

"Hip hip hooray! A blackberry!"

This was little Willow's joyful shout when finally, after asking if the blackberries were ripe yet for the past six months, she saw her first juicy black fruit.

We have the most amazing blackberry bushes around here. Now Willow has learnt that she can pick them herself, there is no stopping her. Needless to say not many blackberries make it home when we go out together.

The Pig has learnt how to pick them too - carefully snozzling them out and plucking them with her teeth.

And now, the chickens have also developed a taste for them...if there are any left for our freezer for the winter months, it will be a miracle with these greedy creatures around!

The chickens cleaning up the fallen berries after Rich had strimmed the grass verges. They swallow them whole:

If there are any left after the hungry marauders have had their fill, we will store them in the chest freezer and hopefully be kept in apple and blackberry crumbles through the winter months. I tried to tell Willow that if she didn't eat them all, she could have some in her Aga porridge in the winter mornings when it is cold outside, but I am not sure a 1-year-old can comprehend that far in advance!
